American David Oliver missed out on the world record as he won the 110m hurdles in a time of 13.01 seconds in Monaco.
The highly anticipated head-to-head in the women’s 100m saw Carmelita Jeter of the United States defeat Jamaica’s Veronica Campbell-Brown in 10.82 secs.
US sprinter Tyson Gay ran 19.72 to win the men’s 200m ahead of Yohan Blake.
Jemma Simpson, the only GB athlete in action in Monaco, was second in the women’s 800m which was won by Alysia Johnson in one minute, 57.34 seconds.
The American athlete’s time was the fastest in the world this year, while Simpson ran a personal best of 1.58.74.
Hurdles star Oliver had hoped to break Dayron Robles’ record mark of 12.87 on Thursday but ran poorly and finished well short of the Cuban’s time.
Oliver finished ahead of fellow American Ryan Wilson in a race that was billed as the big event of the night in the absence of Jamaica’s star sprint duo Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell. There was no men’s 100m race in Monaco.
“I ran to the best of my capability,” said Oliver.
“That was a really fast time. I know people expect me to run sub 13 all of the time but that is not realistic. I achieved my goal here tonight.”
